Glastonbury 2024: Watch Shania Twain close legends set by performing ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman!’

In a moment many fans hoped for, during her legends slot at Glastonbury Festival, the ‘Queen of Country Pop’, Shania Twain performed her 1999 classic, ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman!’, to end her euphoric greatest hits set.

Twain began her set on the Pyramid Stage, which boasted a massive crowd, with a performance of ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’, before treating Glastonbury to a collection of her biggest songs, such as ‘Any Man of Mine’. However, it was the closing moment of ”Man! I Feel Like A Woman!’, that saw Twain reach the zenith of her set.

Earlier in the show, whilec oming down the ramp closer to the spirited crowd, Twain said: “This is amazing ‘coz I can see everything, everyone, every flag. I can see the whole city of Glastonbury from here, and it’s really, really special. First, I just wanna say it’s such an honour to be invited.”

She told the audience later: “I just wanna say like I see a lot of cowboy hats and leopard print, I feel and I see your support. Thank you so much for having me.”

The legends slot has always been one of the most widely discussed and revered aspects of the Worthy Farm festival. Last year, the esteemed folk singer-songwriter Yusuf Islam, once known by his stage name Cat Stevens, performed during the middle of Sunday afternoon on the Pyramid Stage. In a highlight of 2023’s edition, he covered The Beatles classic ‘Here Comes the Sun’ in tribute to the late guitarist and songwriter George Harrison.

“It’s kind of predestination,” he told Rev. Kate Bottley ahead of the performance, which concisely summarised the set’s function for icons only. Aptly, other world-famous artists who have taken the legends slot in recent instalments include Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Jeff Lynne, Lionel Richie, Paul Simon, Ray Davies and Tom Jones.

Ahead of her exciting legends slot, Twain was open about her excitement about putting her own spin on it this year in a new interview with Ken Bruce on Greatest Hits Radio. She said it is “a real wow moment in my career” and “one of a kind”.

Regarding her setlist, the Canadian, who is one of the best-selling artists of all time, made it clear she was to play all her hits. Prompting much anticipation, she explained: “I plan on singing everything that everybody knows so there’s no guessing. It’s just all about the hits. It’s all about singing together and having fun. It’s all about the shoulder-to-shoulder experience, isn’t it? Everybody wants to just sing along and sway along.”

And that she did. It was a triumphant set from start to finish. Perhaps the stand-out moment was when she performed ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman!’ from 1997’s Come On Over. Written with her collaborator and then-husband Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lange, who also produced it, the country-pop classic resonated with its lyrics about female empowerment and remains one of her most culturally significant efforts.

As soon as Twain uttered the iconic opening lines, “Let’s go girls / C’mon,” bursting into her closing song, the Pyramid Stage crowd went wild, as they had been waiting for it all set. They vociferously sang along throughout as Twain, 58, demonstrated why she holds her iconic status. Her band was also triumphant as they closed the curtain on a significant career moment for their leader.

Sunday’s headliner is SZA, with other notable names performing across the day, such as The National, Avril Lavigne, Kim Gordon, and Janelle Monae, to name but a few. Far Out is on the ground all festival long, bringing coverage directly from Pilton.
