Glastonbury 2024: Watch Kasabian close secret set with ‘Fire’
On June 29th, Leicester rock institution Kasabian made a decisive return to Glastonbury Festival. Confirming on social media earlier in the day that they were the band booked to play the mysterious ‘TBA’ slot at 6PM on the Woodsies Stage, their performance closed with a raucous rendition of 2009’s ‘Fire’.
A mass of fans flocked to Woodsies long before Kasabian took to the stage. This caused the festival to take stringent action on an afternoon noted for its intense heat.
Exactly half an hour before the band took to the stage, ever-reliable X account Secret Glasto informed fans: “Woodsies is currently extremely busy. The area has now been locked down. If you’re not already there we strongly recommend seeking an alternative as you will likely be disappointed if you try to gain access. Be safe, look after each other.”
For those who did make it there and were brave enough to resist the heat, things kicked off in style with 2004’s single ‘Club Foot’. Instantly getting the audience going, it asserted beyond all doubt why Kasabian have long been one of the most successful British guitar bands, famed for their live shows.
As the group gears up to release their new album Happenings on July 5th, they treated revellers to a collection of fresh material, including the singles ‘Call’ and ‘Coming Back To Me Good’, which were received by the crowd exuberantly. However, the band’s early hits saw the audience enter a different state of abandon.
While the likes of ‘Club Foot’ and ‘L.S.F.’ from the band’s self-titled 2004 debut caused a storm inside the boiling Woodsies tent – with the latter interpolating Fatboy Slim’s ‘Praise You’ – the cherry on the cake was when the Serge Pizzorno-led outfit closed with 2009’s ‘Fire’. Taken from that year’s West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, the anthemic track, famed for its simple but rousing chorus, took things to a new level, with the group clearly asserting that they still have much left in the tank. The chorus echoed through the tent and beyond.
Following the release of their new album, Kasabian will return to Leicester for a momentous outdoor show in the city’s Victoria Park on July 6th. The performance at Glastonbury 2024 serves as an ideal precursor.
Kasabian debuted at Glastonbury in 2004, and just a decade later, after a string of hit albums, they headlined the Pyramid Stage in 2014. With Pizzorno now leading the operation following the departure of original frontman Tom Meighan in 2020, there can be no doubt that the quartet are still very much relevant following the secret set at Worthy Farm.
Glastonbury Festival runs from June 26th until June 30th, and Far Out is supplying direct coverage from the ground. This year’s headliners of Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA, with the likes of Bloc Party, Kim Gordon and PJ Harvey all appearing across the weekend.
