Ghetts pleads guilty to causing death by dangerous driving
Rapper Ghetts has pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving after killing a man in a fatal hit-and-run.
The 41-year-old (real name Justin Clarke-Samuel) also admitted to a second charge of dangerous driving on the same day, while facing two further charges of driving while over the legal alcohol limit and dangerous driving.
The incident occurred on October 18th, which resulted in the death of 20-year-old Yubin Tamang. Clarke-Samuel is accused of going 60mph in a 30mph zone, hitting Tamang as he was crossing the road in Ilford, north-east London.
The collision took place on Redbridge Lane at around 11:30pm. Tamang passed away in the hospital on October 20th, two days after he was hit.
According to the BBC, the rapper is scheduled to be sentenced on February 12th, where a decision will be made on the two charges.
The first, a charge of causing death by careless driving when over the limit for alcohol, involved him allegedly being over the prescribed limit. He’s accused of driving with 119 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.
The dangerous driving charge involves him allegedly driving dangerously in a BMW M5 on Worcester Crescent and other streets in Redbridge that same day.
Tamang was a student at the University of Roehampton and grew up in Nepal. Following his death, his father wrote, “My little world, all I have left is tears in my hands.”
Born in Plaistow, London, Ghetts is one of the biggest UK rappers of all time, with his album Conflict of Interest peaking at number two on the UK Albums Chart in 2021.
Released on Warner Records, the project featured Skepta, Dave, Giggs, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, and others. His follow-up album, On Purpose, with Purpose, was also nominated for the Mercury Prize.
