Ghetts appears in court following death by dangerous driving charge
London rapper Ghetts has been charged with death by dangerous driving after a fatal hit-and-run earlier this month.
The Mercury Prize-nominated musician was initially charged with serious injury by dangerous driving, but the indictment has now changed following the death of a 20-year-old on October 20th.
Ghetts made his first appearance at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on the same day Yubin Tamang died in the hospital.
The 41-year-old grime MC (real name Clarke-Samuel) is accused of hitting the student with his BMW on Redbridge Lane in Ilford on October 18th and failing to stop.
The BBC reports that Clarke-Samuel appeared in Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on October 27th while wearing a grey prison tracksuit, where he confirmed his name, date of birth, and address.
He’s next scheduled to appear in court at the Old Bailey on November 24th, with police asking for witnesses to come forward.
Tamang grew up in Nepal and was a student at the University of Roehampton. According to the Metro, his father posted photos on social media, writing, “My little world, all I have left is tears in my hands.”
Ghetts released his last album, On Purpose, with Purpose, on Warner Records in February 2024. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize and featured Kano, Wretch 32, Sampha, Unknown T, Skrapz, and others.
Prior to that, his Conflict of Interest album peaked at number two with guest appearances from Dave, Stormzy, Skepta, Giggs, Wretch 32, Ed Sheeran, and more.
The rapper, born in Plaistow, is known as a pioneer of UK rap, while also having a career as an actor in Netflix’s 2024 series Supacell and the 2018 movie, The Intent 2: The Come Up.
