Ghetts charged following fatal hit-and-run

Rapper Justin Clarke-Samuel, better known by his stage name Ghetts, has been formally charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, following on from a fatal hit-and-run incident in London last weekend.

According to reports from the Met Police, the East London rapper failed to stop after hitting a pedestrian on Redbridge Lane East in Ilford on October 18th.

Earlier this week, he appeared at Stratford Magistrates’ Court, where he was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He appeared at the Magistrates’ Court on October 20th, the very same day that the 20-year-old man he was alleged to have hit died in hospital as a result of his injuries, per the BBC. As such, it is expected that the charges brought against the rapper will be changed to causing death by dangerous driving during his next hearing.

Clarke-Samuel has been remanded in custody following the charge against him, and is expected to appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on October 27th.

At the time of writing, the Met Police are still appealing for potential witnesses to the hit-and-run to come forward with any information.

Ghetts has been a key figure in the East London grime and hip-hop scene since back in the early 2000s, releasing his debut mixtape 2000 & Life in 2005.

In more recent years, the rapper released the Mercury Prize-nominated album On Purpose, with Purpose last year, with appearances from the likes of Kano, Wretch 32 and Sampha, among various others.

Clarke-Samuel is yet to comment on the charges.
