Gaspar Noé confirms involvement with AI film festival
Director Gaspar Noé is set to serve on the jury of the upcoming third edition of the Runway AI Film Festival.
The festival is set to take place in 2025 in both New York and Los Angeles. Runway AI Film Festival promises to celebrate short films that have used generative AI technology to assist with their creation, which divisively looks set to play a prominent role in the future of cinema.
Noé will be joined on the panel by Tribeca Enterprises CEO Jane Rosenthal, IMAX head of post and image capture Bruce Markoe, and Lionsgate senior VP of visual effects Brianna Domont.
“I am both very happy and proud to have been invited to join the jury for Runway’s third annual AI Film Festival,” Noé said in a statement provided to IndieWire.
The director continued: “Discovering the work that’s been made with this new technology is fascinating. I am always beyond curious to see how young filmmakers are now reinventing the art of visual storytelling with these incredible tools.”
Meanwhile, Runway Studios head Jamie Umpherson added: “Gaspar’s work is legendary, and having him join the AIFF jury is an honor. At Runway, we’re constantly pushing the boundaries of storytelling and creativity, something Gaspar has always done with his films. His eye for talent and embrace of new technologies fits perfectly with AIFF’s ethos.”
Noé’s involvement comes after Nicolas Cage condemned artificial intelligence in movies after winning ‘Best Actor in a Film’ for Dream Scenario at the Saturn Awards.
The Hollywood icon said in his victory speech: “That is a dead end if an actor lets one AI robot manipulate his or her performance even a little bit, an inch will eventually become a mile and all integrity, purity and truth of art will be replaced by financial interests only. We can’t let that happen.”
Recently, The Brutalist found itself in hot water ahead of awards season when the movie’s editor, Dávid Jancsó, revealed that he had used the AI software Respeecher to improve the accents of lead actors Brody and Felicity Jones.
