French government defends giving George Clooney citizenship
The French government has defended its decision to give George Clooney, his wife Amal, and their two children French citizenship.
On December 31st, the French government responded to questioning by a junior French minister as to why the couple were granted citizenship.
The citizenship was granted because “they contribute, through their distinguished actions, to France’s international influence and cultural outreach,” the government shared.
Clooney and his family permanently reside on their farm in Brignoles in the south of France, a home they purchased in 2021.
Clooney’s citizenship has been the centre of an ongoing feud between the Jay Kelly actor and the President of the United States.
On New Year’s Eve, Trump declared on Truth Social that his French citizenship is “Good News” before attacking his politics. Clooney is a prominent supporter of the Democrats.
During his online rant, Trump wrote, “Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz [sic], Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat.”
In response to Trump’s tirade, Clooney said, “I totally agree with the current president.” He then alluded to the upcoming midterm elections, adding, “We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.”
Backlash to the news of Clooney’s citizenship has also come from Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, a junior minister at the Interior Ministry, who believes Clooney and family have been given special treatment.
“The message being sent is not good,” Vedrenne said, as per AP News. “There is an issue of fairness that, in my eyes, is absolutely essential.”
However, the Foreign Ministry insisted that the family were eligible for citizenship because “they maintain strong personal, professional and family ties with our country.”
