George Clooney reflects on past friendship with Donald Trump: “I knew him very well”

George Clooney has opened up about his former relationship with President Donald Trump, admitting that he once “knew him very well”.

Clooney, who is a supporter of the Democratic Party, has been an outspoken critic of Trump throughout the politician’s two terms of office in the White House.

Earlier this year, Clooney condemned Trump for his lawsuit against CBS News, telling 60 Minutes, “We’re seeing this idea of using government to scare or fine or use corporations – to make journalists smaller”.

In response, Trump took to Truth Social to hit back at Clooney’s comments, describing the Jay Kelly star as “a second rate movie star and failed political pundit”.

Now, in a new interview with Variety, Clooney has reflected on the distant past before they were political foes, stating, “I knew him very well. He used to call me a lot, and he tried to help me get into a hospital once to see a back surgeon.”

Clooney continued, “I’d see him out at clubs and at restaurants. He’s a big goofball. Well, he was. That all changed.”

In the same interview, Clooney again criticised Trump for his lawsuits against CBS News and ABC News, calling for the media institutions to stand tall against the president.

“If CBS and ABC had challenged those lawsuits and said, ‘Go fuck yourself,’ we wouldn’t be where we are in the country. That’s simply the truth,” he claimed.

Earlier this week, Clooney and his wife, Amal, were granted French citizenship, which is where they now call home rather than America. However, during an interview with Esquire in October, Clooney said the move was due to his children and didn’t state that Trump was the reason.

He explained, “I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”
