Francis Ford Coppola shares first look at new movie ‘Megalopolis’

Francis Ford Coppola has unveiled the title image for his upcoming film Megalopolis, which is set to arrive later this year.

Production wrapped on the film last year, coinciding with the launch of a new Instagram account dedicated to its promotion, which Coppola used as a vehicle to share the first look at the forthcoming film.

The project is purported to be the director’s final endeavour, featuring a star-studded cast including Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Fineman, Shia LaBeouf, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Jason Schwartzman.

Director Mike Figgis also recently shot a behind-the-scenes documentary detailing the production of the film, which faced significant setbacks, with challenges arising among crew members, including art directors, production designers, and visual effects supervisors.

During his tenure as the guest of honour at the Ischia Global Film and Music Festival, Figgis described the film as a fusion of Julius Caesar and Blade Runner.

“It is a futuristic film, set in a New York that will be called New Rome (at its centre an architect who wants to rebuild the utopian metropolis after a disaster),” Figgis said. “It’s very philosophical, but also veers towards political satire.”

“Francis is obsessed with Roman history, its roots,” he added. “I will document everything, from our chats to the long waits on the huge set and also the well-known problems that occurred during production, including layoffs, a story emphasized by the press.”

It’s anticipated that Figgis’ documentary on Megalopolis will be released concurrently with the main film, featuring interviews with prominent figures such as Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg.

Meanwhile, in 2022, Coppola said of the film at Taormina Festival: “With Megalopolis I would like to make a Roman epic with the story of an architect who wants to rebuild a utopian New York City after a devastating disaster.”

He added: “I was ready to shoot the film in 2001. Then September 11th happened and I realised that my vision of such a generous and friendly future world was shattered. I could not have made a film that spoke about the goodness of humanity when there was terrorism. So I let it go. Years later, while I was trying to lose a few pounds, I happened to listen to the recordings of that screenplay again and the spark started again.”

As of yet there is no release for Megalopolis. See the first image of the film below.
