Foo Fighters apologise for abruptly ending New York show early

Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters have issued a statement after their show in Queens, New York, was cut short due to perilous weather conditions.

On the evening of July 17th, Grohl and the band, an outfit he formed in 1994 after the tragic end of Nirvana, took the Citi Field baseball stadium in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park. It was their first of two shows at the outdoor venue. However, things abruptly ended after heavy rain bore down on the field and lightning cracked overhead. The group performed just 13 songs from their typically extensive set.

Grohl warned attendees that the show was in danger of ending early due to the storm and the hazardous weather conditions that have been battering America’s eastern seaboard lately. This message to the fans came before the group played ‘Learn to Fly’. The band then only got through the introduction to ‘Everlong’ before the show was cut.

Foo Fighters, who are scheduled to perform at the Citi Field again on July 19th, have now explained their decision in a statement posted on social media. They wrote: “We are so disappointed that we were unable to play our full set for tonight’s fantastic crowd at Citi Field. But the safety of our fans, the crew and everyone working in the stadium comes first, so when it was determined that there was no safe way to continue the show in this dangerous weather, we had no choice but to call it a night.”

The message continued: “We’re grateful for every second we were able to play for you and looking forward to seeing you again – maybe as soon as Friday!”

In other Foo Fighters news, at the end of June, Grohl invited much controversy when he took a swipe at Taylor Swift during the group’s show at the London Stadium. The comments materialised as the ‘Everlong’ outfit played simultaneously in the English capital while Swift had multiple sold-out dates at Wembley Stadium.

“I tell you, man, you don’t want to suffer the wrath of Taylor Swift,” Grohl started. “So we like to call our tour the ‘Errors Tour’. We’ve had more than a few eras and more than a few fucking errors as well. Just a couple.”

However, Grohl’s comments took on a more pointed and controversial nature when he implied Swift doesn’t perform her music live. He continued: “That’s because we actually play live. What? Just saying. You guys like raw, live rock ‘n’ roll music, right? You came to the right fucking place.”

Swift seemingly shot back at Grohl’s comments in her final London show, which took place on June 23rd. As she thanked her audience at Wembley, the singer made reference to the whole team responsible for putting the show together, including, “My band who will be playing live for you for three and a half hours tonight.”

Foo Fighters’ tour is set to continue rolling through stadiums across the United States over the next month, concluding in Seattle on August 18th.
