Fontaines DC show massive display of solidarity with Palestine during Primavera Sound set
Fontaines DC shared several messages of solidarity with Palestine at Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona during their Saturday night performance, displaying projections that read “free Palestine” during their rendition of ‘I Love You’.
On the closing night of the Spanish festival, which has also seen headline performances from Charli XCX, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, the Irish post-punk group made perhaps the biggest display of solidarity with those in Gaza from any of the main performers at this year’s event.
In addition to the “free Palestine” banners, the band also projected the message, “Israel is committing genocide, use your voice”, which appeared during the bridge of the song where the lyrics specifically reference genocide and mass graves.
This is not the first time Fontaines DC have explicitly shown their support for Palestine, with the band having been vocal supporters and signatories of the open letter to not silence fellow Irish group Kneecap for their unfiltered displays of solidarity.
Their compatriots received backlash for making similar gestures during their appearances at Coachella Festival earlier this year, while member Mo Chara has been charged with terror offences for bearing the flag of Lebanese paramilitary group Hezbollah, who are classed as a terrorist organisation within the United Kingdom.
On Friday night, Newcastle-born singer-songwriter Sam Fender made headlines for a similarly impassioned speech urging people to speak out against the genocide in Gaza, calling to “free Palestine” during his headline show at the London Stadium.
Fontaines DC will continue their tour of Europe throughout the summer, which includes a massive headline show in Finsbury Park, London on July 5th.
