Charli XCX says her next album “will probably be a flop”

British singer-songwriter Charli XCX is facing the first summer after her global sensation, Brat, and she’s not expecting to recreate the phenomenon.

Speaking to Culted as an attendee at Cannes Film Festival, she elaborated on this stance, stating, “I don’t really feel the pressure to create another record like Brat because when I was making it, even though I really believed in it and totally knew what I wanted to do with it, I had no idea how it would be received.”

She expanded on the idea of making art in a cultural landscape always changing: “I don’t really feel the pressure because I feel that you can never really do the same thing twice, and my next record will probably be a flop, which I’m down for to be honest.”

Charli recently changed the fluorescent lime green album cover on all streaming sites to a rusted, decaying picture, with the word ‘brat’ forcibly scribbled over. Far Out reflected on this change, writing that “the new Brat album cover represents this entire conversation about how long a moment can last, how long an album gets to be clean and fresh and exciting, and how long XCX gets to be on top.”

Like Charli’s comments at Cannes, Finn Keane, one of the album’s producers, spoke of what could come next and said it was shaping up to be completely “anti-Brat”. He added, “There is a desire in her to do the complete opposite thing again, which is very in keeping with her ethos.”

Charli may need to extend the time before her next musical project, as she has more responsibilities in the film industry. The ‘Apple’ singer is set to star in upcoming titles Faces of Death, Sacrifice, and this year’s upcoming fantasy film 100 Nights of Hero. She also has an A24 collaboration with Takashi Miike in the works, titled The Moment.

Looking forward to this summer, she predicted what pop culture icon might come out on top, in the wake of her own footsteps. “A lot of good contenders, but I don’t know, it could be an Addison Rae Summer 2025,” the star smirked.
