Fontaines DC release new single ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’

Fontaines DC have released their new single ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’, the first release following their album Romance last year.

The song was teased on the band’s social media earlier this week, firstly with a seemingly cryptic image presenting the words ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’ with links to their mailing list.

They then posted a short teaser clip showing a close-up of a girl yearning out of a car window set to a snippet of the track, which tackles the beauty of youth when it surrounds you.

According to the band’s Conor Deegan III, this was directly inspired by the birth of Carlos O’Connell’s child, with ‘It’s Amazing to Be Young’ centralising the entire message as an almost lullaby-leaning track about being around a newborn child.

“The feeling of hope a child can give is profound and moving, especially for young men like us,” Deegan said. “That sense of wanting to create a world for them to grow up in happily. It’s a feeling that fights against the cynicism that can often overtake us in the modern world.”

He said that the track saw them wanting to “declare which side we were on”, which was the realisation that it “really is amazing to be young”. The track celebrates being “free” and wanting to “spread” that euphoric feeling. “We want to protect it for the others around us,” Deegan added, “and maybe in doing that, can also help protect it for ourselves.”

The music video, which was directed by Luna Carmoon, takes this a step further by exploring the importance of human connection in a world brimming with countless distractions. “I feel like we’re living in this weird time where romantic love is being pushed to the side, and sex and love is unvirtuous and no longer what people want to see,” Carmoon said. “I don’t believe that at all. I love that these two people have fallen in love with themselves, and I wanted to see them fall in love with each other.”

The band is set to play their biggest-ever headline show this summer at London’s Finsbury Park on July 5th alongside Amyl and the Sniffers and Kneecap. This run continues the undeniable success following Romance, their most successful release to date, achieving the number two spot in the albums chart, just behind Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet.

It also received two nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards for ‘Best Rock Album’ and ‘Best Alternative Music Performance’ for the single ‘Starburster’.
