Flea announces debut solo album, ‘Honora’, headline tour and shares single with Thom Yorke
Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has announced his debut solo album, Honora.
The record is set to be released on March 27th through Nonesuch Records. To preview the album, Flea has shared the new single, ‘Traffic Lights’, which features Radiohead’s Thom Yorke on vocals, piano and the synthesiser. Notably, Yorke and Flea were previously bandmates in Atoms For Peace.
For Honora, Flea, who contributed vocals to the album, was joined in the studio by saxophonist Josh Johnson, guitarist Jeff Parker, bassist Anna Butterss, and drummer Deantoni Parks. In addition to enlisting the help of Yorke, Nick Cave also appears on the project.
The ten-track album features six original compositions, in addition to takes on creations originally by George Clinton and Eddie Hazel, Jimmy Webb, Frank Ocean and Shea Taylor, and Ann Ronell.
Flea said of new single ‘Traffic Lights’, “Deantoni and I played what became ‘Traffic Lights’ the first day. Something about it reminded me of Atoms For Peace, so I sent it to Thom. Just knowing him, I thought it would be a rhythm and a sensibility that he would relate to. And I was right, he did.”
The bassist continued, “With a gorgeous melody and the words, you know, about living in the ‘upside down’ and how do you make sense of things when we’re getting all this fake shit and real shit? Everyone has their ways of dealing with the world. But he’s just the warmest, free flowing, jamming motherfucker.”
To celebrate the release of Honora, Flea is set to embark upon a theatre tour across North America, Europe and the United Kingdom later this year.
In May, he will bring the album to Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, New York, Washington and Los Angeles. Then, later that month, he will perform in Berlin, Amsterdam, London and Paris.
Flea’s sole UK date is set to take place at the Koko in Camden on May 26th.
