Finn Wolfhard admits his first solo album was “scary”: “I couldn’t hide behind a band”
Finn Wolfhard might be gearing up for the release of his second album with all the swagger of a seasoned rock and roll star, but in an exclusive interview with Far Out, he admitted that making his first album was a “scary” affair.
The young star rose to fame as one of the main characters in the Netflix hit show, Stranger Things, before carving out another career in music.
During his time on the sci-fi show, Wolfhard lent his vocals and guitar playing to the Canadian indie rock band Calpurnia, who were active from 2017 to 2019. This was Wolfhard’s first foray into the expansive world of making music.
“The first band I ever had when I was like 15, this band Calpurnia, was like my first record. And to me, the coolest thing ever is to be part of a band. It’s great to front a band, it’s nice to be able to have a group of people,” he shared.
In the same way, Wolfhard revealed, he always enjoyed being part of “a crew or a team”; so when he began his solo career, Wolfhard had a lot of adjusting to do.
He continued, “With this first solo record (2025’s Happy Birthday), it was a bit scary because I couldn’t kind of hide behind a project name. I couldn’t hide behind a band. It was just me.”
Wolfhard explained that “Even though I had so many friends help me with that record, it was still at the end of the day […] just me in a four-track, you know.”
The star revealed that this meant his solo work is a lot more “vulnerable” than anything he has done before.
Wolfhard’s second solo album, Fire From The Hip, will be released on July 10th. A week after the highly anticipated release, he will embark on a North American headline tour, which kicks off on July 17th in Washington, D.C.
