Feet return with new single ‘The Real Thing’

Feet - 'The Real Thing'
4

After being thrown into the indie-rock limelight back in 2019 with their debut album What’s Inside Is More Than Just Ham, Feet are back and still on top form. Their follow-up single, ‘The Real Thing’, is another foolproof track set to excite the masses about their sophomore album.

Announcing that Make It Up will arrive on June 14th, 2024, it’s sounding more like a 2014 classic. I mean that as the biggest compliment in the world. What I wouldn’t do to go back to that post-GCSE summer, drinking cider in the park, kissing my friends, and discovering the true meaning of a house party. ‘The Real Thing’ has me nostalgic for my teenhood, providing a track that would have sat perfectly on the playlist.

Because I think we can all agree that indie music was simply better then. It was a golden moment when new, exciting bands were being born every week: Wolf Alice, Swim Deep, and Peace. It was a time in the gap between streaming services taking over and social media utterly ruining it all. It seemed to be nothing but good vibes and good songs. Feet feel like a direct product of it but in a fresh and uncorrupted way.

Their debut album was the same. Their music has a way of capturing nostalgia without making it feel like a marketing tool or dusty. They tour all corners of the indie world with the energy of real music fans who are simply really into the genre. In short, they always sound like they’re having fun. ‘The Real Thing’ holds that energy, too, delivering a crowd-pleaser indie love song.

But just because it’s fun, doesn’t mean it’s not finished. The band have clearly put a lot of skill, effort and thought into being able to sound this effortless. Of their sophomore release, the band are quick to establish this, stating, “There’s no throw away ideas on this album and everything has to have its place. It has to be ironed out and perfected.”

“I don’t like to say polished, but it is perfected to a point where everything can be done in its fullest form. I feel like we’ve got 12 complete songs on this album and not 12 ideas,” he continued. They’ve certainly succeeded on this lead track. By the time the outro fades out, you’re left utterly satisfied. Unlike some of their indie peers, FEET clearly understand the power of a good song. Giving you lyrics to sing along, melodies to get stuck in your head and rhythms to dance to, ‘The Real Thing’ is definitely a complete song. More than that, it is definitely a banger.
