Father John Misty announces new album ‘Mahashmashana’

Father John Misty has unveiled details of his new studio album, Mahashmashana, set for release on November 22nd through Sub Pop and Bella Union.

The upcoming record has been self-produced along with assistance from Drew Erickson and Jonathan Wilson on executive production duties. To tease Mahashmashana, Father John Misty has shared the seven-minute musical extravaganza, ‘Screamland’, which features guitar work from Alan Spearhawk of Low.

In total, Mahashmashana boasts a lengthy running time of 50-minutes despite only containing eight tracks, including three songs that will already be familiar to his audience. Previous singles, ‘I Guess Time Makes Fools of Us All‘, ‘She Cleans Up’, and ‘Josh Tillman and The Accidental Dose’, all appear on the forthcoming LP.

According to press materials for the album, the record’s title, Mahashmashana, translates to “great cremation ground, all things put going thither.”

Furthermore, Father John Misty has already detailed his plans to take Mahashmashana on the road across the United Kingdom and Europe.

The run of dates is set to begin in mainland Europe on April 3rd, 2025, in Oslo before Father John Misty is set to visit Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, Brussels and Utrecht. The American singer-songwriter will then arrive in the United Kingdom with the leg starting in Edinburgh on April 12th. He’ll also play the O2 Apollo in Manchester and the Brighton Dome before concluding the tour at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 15th.

Mahashmashana marks Father John Misty’s first studio album in over two years, but the mythical music figure has remained busy, and released his first greatest hits compilation, Greatish Hits…, earlier this summer.

Additionally, in December, 2023, Father John Misty surprise released the live album, Live At The Sunset Cultural Center, which was only recorded a week before it arrived on Bandcamp.

His last studio album, 2022’s Chloë and the Next 20th Century, marked the highest-charting project of his career and peaked at second position in the UK chart.

In a review of Chloë and the Next 20th Century, Far Out wrote: “The beauty of Father John Misty derives from not knowing at what point the character begins and where Tillman ends. All you can do is allow yourself to be immersed and enjoy the ride. The newest LP, meanwhile, begins in cinematic style with the enticing opening track, ‘Chloë’, which immediately grabs attention as Misty paints an alluring backdrop of old Hollywood, which he loosely uses as the canvas for the album.”
