Father John Misty shares new song ‘I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All’
Father John Misty has treated fans by sharing a brand new song, ‘I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All,’ and has hinted at the release of a brand new album. Everything was shared through a secret link, and the song has yet to be officially released on streaming services.
The singer-songwriter, whose real name is Josh Tillman, texted his fans who were signed up to his mailing list on July 13th. The message contained a link to his brand-new single and teased that something new was coming soon.
Those signed up received a simple message that read, “Hey, it’s Josh. Here’s a new one – ‘I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All’.” He continued, “It’s on the record coming out later this year (DON’T TELL ANYONE), but when the idea of doing a compilation/Greatish [sic] Hits thing came up we were definitely missing a 10 minute funk song to summarize what a deluded and triumphant experience this whole thing’s been so far.”
Tillman continues by saying, “It doesn’t exactly scream ‘single’ or anything… but just wanted you to hear it.”
His description of the song is pretty accurate. Coming in at 8 minutes 35 seconds long, this is an ambitious track to take on and an even more ambitious track to release as a teaser for the new album. It doesn’t hide what it is from the moment it starts, as the beat is energetic and fun, funk-infused guitar, bass and horns make for the perfect dancing backdrop.
Tillman’s vocals are as beautiful as ever. His voice is effortlessly smooth throughout this lyric-heavy ballad, which is undertaken like it’s nothing. Each phrase brings the singer back to the chorus line, “I guess time just makes fools of us all,” which feels particularly calculated during such a long song.
Tillman is right, though, that this track could never be a single. While it sounds lovely and is fun to immerse yourself in, there isn’t much variation there, and the song becomes intensely repetitive at around the five-minute mark.
The new release doesn’t come as much of a surprise to fans as it did last month when the singer-songwriter teased two brand-new songs on his social media. Fans speculated that one of the songs, or potentially the album, is called Josh Tillman And The Accidental Dose; however, this has yet to be confirmed or denied.
