“They think it’s all over”: Far Out’s music and football quiz

Music and football go hand in hand, like Neymar Júnior and injuries, Celtic and Martin O’Neill, or Leeds United fans and their weird obsession with attendance figures.

In other words, music has always been an integral aspect of football’s cultural footprint, and the FIFA World Cup is a prime example of that fact. For decades, national teams have called upon their brightest and best musical artists to create rousing anthems in the hopes of spurring the players on to victory, albeit with varying degrees of success. It is almost impossible to watch the 2026 World Cup without conjuring up the sounds of Shakira, Baddiel and Skinner, or, at least in the group stages, Baccara’s disco anthem ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’.

While there are countless songs that have been tailor-made for the footballing world – some better than others – there are also many tunes that have been adopted into that world without any rhyme or reason.

On any standard Saturday, on the terraces of English football, you can hear the influence of anything from The Dave Clark Five’s ‘Glad All Over’ to The White Stripes, The Beach Boys, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, and even traditional South African kwela music as far as ‘Tom Hark’ is concerned.

It is a beautiful relationship which has made subcultural stars of musicians whose work has been adopted by the terraces, and they, in turn, have soundtracked some truly unforgettable moments in the lives of football fans everywhere.

In an effort to celebrate the lasting bond between football and music, in addition to testing your knowledge of largely useless facts, Far Out have put together this quiz of music-themed football trivia. Whether you’re honing your future pub quiz knowledge or simply killing time in the hydration break, put your footballing mind to the test.
