Ethan Hawke says secret Richard Linklater movie “will be among the greatest films ever made”
Ethan Hawke has stated he believes his upcoming film with Richard Linklater could be one of the “greatest films ever made”.
The upcoming film will mark the tenth collaboration between Hawke and Linklater, who have been on a roll in recent years. Their most recent film, Blue Moon, arrived in 2025, and Hawke will compete in the ‘Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’ category at the Golden Globes for his performance.
While information regarding the plot is thin on the ground, it is believed to be centred on the transcendentalism movement in the 19th century, which both Linklater and Hawke discussed in 2021.
Now, Hawke has teased the movie during an appearance on TODAY on January 7th. “Everything’s been preparation for what’s to come,” he said of the forthcoming film, before adding, “The tenth is going to be the best.”
In response to the host being taken aback by Hawke’s strong words, the actor explained his reasoning for believing in the project so heavily, adding, “I’m making it, man. I’m not even shy. I’m not even nervous about saying it. We’ve been thinking about this movie since 1998.”
He noted that “we’ve been thinking about this movie since 1998” and Linklater has “been thinking about it longer than that”, before stating, “He’s had this dream for a long time in his head and it’s gonna be good.”
Hawke proudly said of the upcoming project, “Personally, I have no doubt in saying it will be among the greatest films ever made.”
He also provided an update on when it’ll be expected to arrive on screens, sharing, “And I’ll be back on your show in about 18 months to back it up. We’ll finish it next year so, yeah, ‘27.”
Linklater has a history of taking his time with his projects. Hawke previously starred in Boyhood, which was filmed over a 12-year period before arriving in 2014. He’s also currently making Merrily We Roll Along, starring Paul Mescal, which he plans to shoot over 20 years.
No further information has been revealed regarding the cast for Hawke and Linklater’s tenth film together.
