Emily Ratajkowski and Olivia Wilde condemn Katy Perry’s space flight: “Beyond parody”

Actors Emily Ratajkowski and Olivia Wilde have separately slammed the 11-minute space flight that Katy Perry and five other women took on April 14th.

The mission made history as the first all-female space expedition since 1963, using Jeff Bezos’ new autonomous Blue Origin rocket. However, it has attracted controversy and mocking from around the world, including from both Ratajkowski and Wilde.

Ratajkowski said in a TikTok video: “That space mission this morning? That’s end time shit. Like, this is beyond parody. That you care about Mother Earth and it’s about Mother Earth, and you’re going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that’s singlehandedly destroying the planet?”

She added that she was “disgusted” by the mission, continuing: “Look at the state of the world. Think about how many resources went into putting these women into space… For what? What was the marketing there?”

Similarly, actor and director Wilde took to her Instagram stories, sharing a meme of Perry emerging from the capsule and kissing the ground, with the caption: “Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess.”

Alongside Perry on the flight were five other women: broadcaster Gayle King, journalist Lauren Sánchez, rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn.

During their mission, the passengers flew to the Karman line, which is the internationally recognised altitude border crossing for entering into space.

Despite making history, the space mission has attracted controversy due to Bezos’ connection and for environmental reasons. The flight reportedly emitted over 28,000 tonnes of harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in the space of only its 11-minute trip.
