Katy Perry to be sent into space by Jeff Bezos
American pop star Katy Perry is set to be sent into space by Blue Origin, a company co-founded by Amazon owner Jeff Bezos.
Perry will be part of an all-female crew for the mission, which also includes Bezos’ fiancé, Lauren Sánchez, who formerly worked as a television correspondent. Film producer Kerianne Flylle, television presenter Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen will also be on the New Shepard rocket.
In a statement, Blue Origin said of Perry’s involvement: “Katy is honored to be a part of Blue Origin’s first all-female crew and hopes her journey encourages her daughter and others to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively.”
Meanwhile, Sánchez stated she is hopeful the mission will “inspire the next generation of explorers”. Blue Origin added of her participation: “She is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come.”
Currently, there is no specific time that the New Shephard rocket will be launched, but Blue Origin are planning for it to depart into space during spring.
Perry is set to begin her world tour in Mexico City in April, which suggests the Blue Origin mission will take place before she hits the road.
The tour will then roll into the United Kingdom in October for a series of arena dates, beginning on October 4th at the SSE Arena in Belfast and concluding at The O2 in London on October 14th.
