Elton John items fetch $8 million at auction in New York
An auction of items in New York taken from Elton John‘s recently sold home in Atlanta, Georgia, fetched $8 million, including fees.
The singer’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour concluded last year, prompting him and his husband David Furnish to put their Peachtree Road property up for sale. It sold in 2023 for $7.2 million.
With fervent collectors eagerly participating in the auction, John’s grand piano sold for more than $200,000, and a pair of sunglasses, a defining element of the singer’s iconic style, was purchased for $22,680, significantly surpassing the initial estimate.
The collection also featured pieces by artists such as Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Richard Avedon, which was all curated jointly by him and his husband.
Per Christie’s, the highlight of the auction was a Banksy triptych personally acquired by John from the British artist. The Flower Thrower Triptych fetched $1.55 million ($1.9 million including fees), surpassing the upper end of its estimated range of $1 million to $1.5 million.
John initially purchased the condo shortly after getting sober in the 1990s, according to Christie’s. There, he found “solace and support in the warm community and recovery facilities.”
Auctions offering collections or items that belonged to famous figures has risen in popularity over the years. In September 2023, thousands of items belonging to the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury were sold for £40 million ($50.4 million).
Meanwhile, Elton recently announced a new book celebrating his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, set for release on September 24th.
The book description reads, “Readers will get a behind-the-scenes look into every aspect of the incredible tour, including Elton’s dazzling, final performances at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium, his record-breaking performance at Glastonbury, his legendary touring wardrobe by Gucci, the beautifully detailed stage design, celebrity guest attendees, official tour photography, and more.”
