Ellen DeGeneres blasts ICE over Renee Good killing: “So angry and so worried”
Ellen DeGeneres has criticised the US government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over the killing of Renee Good.
The former talk show host made a series of posts on Instagram over the weekend, breaking her silence on the death of Good, a 37-year-old poet who was shot dead by federal immigration agent Jonathan Ross in the state of Minneapolis earlier this month.
The incident has sparked protests and outrage all over the country, with DeGeneres becoming the latest celebrity to add her voice to the calls. She shared three posts to the social media platform – one of Good, one of protestors, and one of herself speaking to the camera.
In the latter video, she said: “I just wanted to say, I am so sorry for what is happening in Minneapolis and our country, really, but specifically Minneapolis right now.”
DeGeneres then added: “My thoughts and my prayers are going out to everyone, and I’m proud of everyone who’s protesting peacefully, and I am sorry for anyone who has been hurt just for protesting, for doing what you should be doing. Anyway, just sending love.”
In the caption of the post with a photo of Good, DeGeneres shared a statement from the victim’s wife in the caption, adding her own note at the top, which said: “I’m so sad, and so angry, and so worried.”
In the video she shared of protestors raising their voices against ICE, she also implored them to “hold on”.
DeGenres and her wife Portia Rossi relocated to the UK in late 2024, which she confirmed was due to the re-election of Trump for a second term. This has largely kept her out of the spotlight ever since, but she has floated the idea of possibly wanting to reignite her comedy career in some capacity.
Elsewhere, many other high-profile celebrities have also spoken out in the aftermath of Good’s killing, including a number of actors at the Golden Globes, including Mark Ruffalo, who wore pins saying “Be Good” to the event.
Additionally, Bruce Springsteen also continued on his tirade towards Trump, this time dedicating the song ‘The Promised Land’ to Good at his show in New Jersey over the weekend, and saying, “ICE should get the fuck out of Minneapolis”.
