Eagles confirmed for Las Vegas Sphere residency
After months of rumours and speculation, classic rock icons the Eagles have officially announced that they will be the fourth band to host a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Currently, the 20,000-capacity venue is hosting Dead & Company, the band made up of former members of the Grateful Dead, who will be performing until August of this year.
The news of an Eagles residency was announced via the band’s official website earlier this week. Rumours surrounding the announcement have been floating around on the internet for months, but the ten-week residency that many fans were hoping for has now been reduced to an eight-show run at the Las Vegas venue.
Eagles are set to make the Las Vegas Sphere their home for eight dates performed between September 20th and October 19th later this year. It is, as yet, unclear how the band will utilise the immersive four-dimensional capabilities of the $2.3 billion venue.
Despite having split up multiple times throughout their tumultuous history, the Eagles have been performing together in this new era since 2017. The group embarked upon a farewell tour, entitled ‘The Long Goodbye Tour’, last year, which has seen them travel across the globe, giving fans a chance to see them one last time. It seems likely that the Sphere concerts will provide a bookend to that tour.
The band are set to become the fourth act to host a residency at the venue, which was opened by an extensive run of dates by U2. Fans were initially impressed by the immersive audio and visual experience produced by the venue’s wraparound LED screen and spatial audio capabilities. However, the venue has also been criticised for its colossal presence in the Las Vegas skyline, as well as essentially acting like a giant advertising billboard for most of the time.
Following U2, both Phish and Dead & Company have performed at the unique venue. The venue has, again, been criticised for its seemingly blinkered booking options, given that every group to perform thus far has been of a similar age and musical style.
It is unclear whether the Sphere will diversify its bookings anytime soon, but the announcement of the Eagles seems to fit in pretty seamlessly with the previous shows. Tickets for the residency are due to go on sale next Friday and will start at $175, depending on the seat position within the state-of-the-art venue.
