Drug Church announce new album ‘Prude’
Albany’s Drug Church have returned. Supplying their first new single in over a year, ‘Demolition Man’, the alt quintet have also announced their new album, Prude.
In typical form, ‘Demolition Man’ is a catchy number that grows on the listener, featuring Nick Cogan and Cory Galusha’s crunching guitars, a rumbling rhythm section and frontman Patrick Kindlon’s wry commentary on the state of society. He sings at one point: “But mankind / He’s got no of purpose / But mankind / It’s all call centres and percocets / Picture being built for one thing / And when that thing is done you feel free”.
“A song about envying dogs because they know what they’ve gotta do each day,” Kindlon explains of the new track. “I’m sure dogs are often confused, but they always have the north star of instinct. People live without it.”
Drug Church have also marked the announcement of Prude by sharing the video for ‘Demolition Man’. In a convergence made in heaven, the surreal clip features the legendary Biff Wiff, known for playing Santa and Detective Crashmore in Tim Robinson’s hit comedy series I Think You Should Leave. Many will also recognise him as Rick in the Daniels’ Oscar-winning movie Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Prude arrives on October 4th via the quartet’s long-time home of Pure Noise Records. It marks the group’s fifth studio album and is the follow-up to 2022’s acclaimed Hygiene, the record that provided cuts such as ‘Million Miles of Fun’ and ‘Tiresome’.
At the end of 2023, we caught up with Drug Church guitarist Cogan, who also plays in Militarie Gun and Pile of Love. “If there is a secret, I haven’t exactly figured it out yet,” he admitted regarding their work. “But I really, really love playing the guitar and jumping around, so I think that helps. For each of the last two years, I’ve been pushing 200 shows out of 365 days. So more days playing than not.”
Adding: “To be sure, I am painfully and constantly missing home and the people/animals I love. But I try hard to remind myself that these are, in fact, the ever-elusive good ole days, and I don’t want to miss anything.”
As for Militarie Gun, they released their new track, ‘Thought You Were Waving’, earlier this week. It’s a slower number by the Los Angeles group but contains one of their biggest choruses to date.
