Militarie Gun release new single ‘Thought You Were Waving’
Los Angeles punks Militarie Gun have returned with their new single, ‘Thought You Were Waving’.
The new track follows June’s snappy cut ‘Gun Under The Gun (MFG)’. A 53-second release, which is their hardest number to date, was released as part of WWE 2K24’s Post Malone and Friend Pack. The American rapper is one of the Ian Shelton-led band’s most prominent fans.
Now, Shelton and the group have released a new track entirely of their own doing and a stylistic counterpoint to the hardcore of ‘Gun Under The Gun (MFG)’. A slower number featuring one of their hookiest choruses to date, prior to release, they had already played it live, including at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound, which gave fans a rousing taste of what’s to come. Comprised of Shelton’s punchy lyrics and delivery, as well as crunching guitars and even vocal harmonies in the climax, it certainly adds another string to the band’s proverbial bow.
The central lyrics, “I froze, I froze”, will undoubtedly echo in the live setting after fans acquaint themselves with them. Shelton has an uncanny knack for penning concise but bellowing numbers.
The anthem arrives alongside a wry video directed by Neta Ben Ezra, which shows the band in a series of hazardous situations, and plays into the bleak spirit of the chorus lyric, “I thought you were waving / turns out you were drowning”.
Militarie Gun have had a busy 2024 so far. In April, they released their mini-documentary Live Under The Sun, which captured them reuniting with their Life Under The Sun EP collaborators at Manchester Orchestra’s Atlanta studio. These guests include Mannequin Pussy’s Marisa Dabice and Christine Goodwyne of Pool Kids, who replaced Bully’s Alicia Bognanno for a rendition of ‘Never Fucked Up Twice’, a touching rework of another slower staple by the band, ‘Never Fucked Up Once’.
In June 2023, Militarie Gun released their acclaimed debut album, Life Under the Gun. Awarding it ‘Album of the Week’, Far Out wrote: “On Life Under The Gun, Militarie Gun has not only produced one of the albums of the year but has categorically shown that they have a great deal to offer moving forward. Whether you call it hardcore, alternative or even indie, the tag doesn’t matter”.
We also caught up with ‘Guitarist of the Year’ Nick Cogan at the end of 2023. As a member of Drug Church alongside Militarie Gun, he discussed balancing both bands: “I try to give 100% of myself in return for the leniency. If we’re talking creatively, for me, it’s incredible to have various outlets because I like a lot of different stuff, and I write a lot of different stuff. Every riff has a home.”
