Does Neo die in ‘The Matrix’?

As the 20th Century drew to a close, two siblings were working on a movie that would change everything. The Wachowski sisters, Lana and Lilly, were directing a science-fiction action film about a computer hacker who discovers he and the rest of humanity have been living in a simulation. Known for its ground-breaking ‘bullet time’ sequences and its culture-pervading plot, The Matrix was a massive hit. It was the fourth-highest-grossing movie of the entire year and even scooped four Oscars in a number of technical categories.

Knowing they had a big deal on their hands, the Wachowskis returned to this world with two sequels in 2003: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Then, some 19 years later, Lana returned alone to direct a fourth film, The Matrix Resurrections. Outside of the cinema, the franchise has produced video games, comic books, animated anthology films, and, according to Wikipedia, screensavers.

The protagonist of this saga is Thomas A Anderson, a computer hacker living inside The Matrix who eventually takes on the name ‘Neo’ upon learning the truth. Neo, played by everyone’s favourite Canadian Keanu Reeves, is revealed to be ‘The One’, a messianic figure prophesied to rescue humanity from its enslavement. Over the course of the films, Neo discovers his true purpose, falls in love with Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), learns how to do cool slow-motion leans, and becomes the hero everyone knew he was destined to be. He also dies a couple of times… or does he?

At the end of the first film, Neo is killed by the villainous Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), before the discovery of his ‘One’ powers brings him back. In Revolutions, he assimilates with Smith to destroy the virus running rampant through the virtual world. This act reboots the Matrix and saves humanity, but at the cost of Neo’s life. That’s why the fourth film is called Resurrections – it’s revealed that he actually survived and can be brought back to life.

So, did Neo actually die in The Matrix Revolutions?

Owing to the nature of the series – and the not-so-subtle religious and philosophical elements of the script – it’s hard to tell whether or not somebody has actually croaked in the world of ‘The Matrix.’ A post on the Matrix subreddit from user waveball03 asks why everyone thought Neo died at the end of Revolutions, as it wasn’t clear to them that he’d perished. Replies range from paragraphs of theory to pithy one-liners, with other users also admitting they weren’t sure he’d died either.

Poster FluffyDoomPatrol sums it up best. “Throughout the films, programs refer to being deleted and ‘returning to the source’ in the same way a human would talk about dying and going to heaven,” they write. “At the end of the films, Neo goes to the source, implying death.”

However, as waveball03 points out in a later comment, characters die and come back to life all the time in ‘The Matrix’. What does it even mean to ‘die’ in a world where you can be brought back with the flick of a switch?

Perhaps the final word on this should go to Lana Wachowski herself. Speaking at the International Literary Festival Berlin ahead of the release of Resurrections, the director explained that her decision to revive Neo and Trinity was based on the grief she felt following a number of real-life bereavements she had suffered. This would imply that these characters did die, as their rebirths were inspired by people who had actually passed on in the real world.
