Demi Moore names her favourite movies of all time
After a teenage modelling career, Demi Moore began to foray into acting, rising to prominence in the late 1980s. She broke through into the mainstream when she starred alongside Patrick Swayze in the hugely successful romantic drama Ghost.
The 1990s saw Moore star in many box office hits, such as Indecent Proposal, which also featured Woody Harrelson and Robert Redford. Elsewhere, she has appeared in G.I. Jane, The Hunchbank of Notre Dame, The Scarlet Letter, Striptease and The Juror, although many of her movies have often faced harsh criticism.
Reflecting on the films that impacted her, Moore once sat down with Rotten Tomatoes and Alec Baldwin to discuss her favourite cinematic efforts, starting with an effort featuring Baldwin himself: Beetlejuice. She told the actor: “Okay, you want to know what one of my favourites is, actually? 100 per cent, every year, by the way? Beetlejuice. Literally, it’s literally every year. Every year. I love Beetlejuice. Truly.”
Directed by Tim Burton, Beetlejuice was the filmmaker’s second feature, and it remains one of his most beloved works. It follows a pair of married ghosts who attempt to scare humans out of their former home by using another mischievous spirit named Beetlejuice.
Moore explained her love for the film, stating: “First of all, there was nothing like it, and the combination between Alec and Geena [Davis] that was so genuine and sweet and real, like what their pursuit was.”
Baldwin recalled, “Tim Burton said, ‘I wanted the dead people in the movie to be less scary than the living people,'” to which Moore agreed, “And it was just like that. The part that was just them, wanting their dream, mixed with the absolute madness.”
Moore is also a fan of The Philadephia Story, starring Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. Directed by George Cukor, the movie launched Hepburn to even greater stardom, earning her an Academy Award nomination. Moore exclaimed: “By far, for me, one of the top, top, top, top, top movies.” The project has since been lauded as one of the defining works of the 1940s, becoming a staple of the romantic comedy genre.
Another favourite of Moore’s is What a Way to Go! by J. Lee Thompson. The actor revealed: “One of my favourites, all-time. What a Way to Go! I love that movie.” The movie features performances from some of Old Hollywood’s biggest names, such as Shirley MacLaine, Dean Martin, Gene Kelly, Robert Mitchum, and more. However, it remains relatively underappreciated, perhaps due to its slightly campy sensibilities. Moore added, “I tried to get them to remake it. It’s so funny.”
The actor also mentioned her love of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, which she called “hard to beat.” Released in 1972, the film revolutionised the gangster genre and became one of the first true blockbusters, forever changing the course of mainstream cinema. It is widely heralded as one of the greatest movies of all time, exploring a family – the mighty Corleones – bound together by crime.
