Debra Messing shares post calling Zohran Mamdani an “America-hating jihadist”

Hollywood actor Debra Messing reshared a social media post calling the mayor-elect of New York, Zohran Mamdani, an “America-hating jihadist”.

Mamdani, who was the candidate for the Democratic Party, won the election in New York on November 4th, beating competition from independent Andrew Cuomo and the Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

In his victory speech, the 34-year-old democratic socialist used his moment to send a message to the White House, stating, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.”

In the build-up to the election, Messing, who supported Cuomo and previously starred in the hugely successful sitcom Will & Grace, shared a series of posts on Instagram Stories attacking the Democratic Party candidate.

Per The Cut, one graphic that she reposted read, “A vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani is a vote for New-York-Stan.”

Another graphic that was reposted to Instagram Stories featured a ballot paper that said, “A Democrat” in one box, alluding to Cuomo, and “An Actual Communist Jihadist … A literal Karl Marx-quoting, America-hating jihadist,” in reference to Mamdani. This same graphic was also shared by Republican senator Ted Cruz on X.

On November 3rd, Messing shared another post originally made by an account named JoanOfJudea, attacking Mamdani’s Muslim faith. It claimed that Muslims are “commanded to lie if it means spreading Islam,” unlike those who follow Christianity or Judaism.

Additionally, Messing, who is Jewish and a prominent supporter of Israel, shared a screenshot of a Donald Trump post on Truth Social, which reads, “Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!”

Previously, in June, Messing said in the comments section of an Instagram post: “I have nothing against Socialism, don’t know where you got that. I voted against M because he celebrated 9/11. Let that sink in. I love my country. My reasoning is not Islamophobia. I’ve chosen to live in the most beautifully diverse city in the world.”

She then alleged that Mamdani supported terrorism, adding, “The same people who did 9/11 did Oct. 7. I just don’t want a mayor who sides with terrorists. Oh and he wants to defund the police. And he has no experience. I’ll stop here.”

Following his historic victory, Mamdani will become the youngest mayor in over 100 years when he takes office on January 1st, 2026.
