Woody Allen declares support for Andrew Cuomo in New York mayoral election
Director Woody Allen has expressed his support for Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral election in New York.
Cuomo previously served as the Governor of New York between 2011 and 2021 as a member of the Democratic Party. However, Cuomo resigned from the role after an independent investigation by the New York Attorney General’s office was published, which found he sexually harassed 11 women.
The former Governor did attempt to run for the Democratic Party in the mayoral race, but conceded after it became clear that Zohran Mamdani had a huge lead following the first-round results. He later confirmed his plans to run as an independent.
Speaking to Bari Weiss of The Free Press, Allen said of the upcoming election: “Yes, I’m going to vote. I’m going to vote for (Chris) Cuomo because I feel that Mamdani is perfectly nice. His heart is in the right place, he wants nice things, but I think Cuomo will do a much better job. Cuomo will be much better for New York. He’ll be much more efficient, and he’ll be much more… he’ll just do a better job/”
Allen continued: “They all want nice things, they want the city to be up, they want people to be protected, they want poor people to afford things, they want decent schools. They all say that, none of them are nasty, but, I think of the people running that Cuomo, by far, will be able to do the best job for New York at this particular time.”
The filmmaker then claimed that Mamdani didn’t have enough political experience for the role, adding of Cuomo, “I think he’s experienced, he knows New York, and Mamdani is inexperienced and his heart is in the right place, but he’s not going to get any of the things done, or so few of them that he wants too. I just think Cuomo is the guy that could best serve New York at this time.”
The New York mayoral election is scheduled to take place on November 4th. The latest polling, via the New York Times, has Mamdani as the favourite with a 43 per cent chance of winning, and Cuomo in second place with a 28 per cent chance of victory.
In the same interview, Allen also said of his political leanings, “Over the years, I’ve voted Democratic almost all the time because I almost always felt the Democrat was the right person for the job. Not because he was a Democrat, but because what he was selling was good.”
