David Squires delves into… the corruption of the World Cup 2026 and its inexorable ties to ‘Kes’

With the camera continually panning away from the action to rappers and YouTubers taking selfies, and bloody refs being given the opportunity to speak, one question has abounded throughout this World Cup: has football come too far from its roots?

Presently, I’m so gripped by World Cup Fever that it’s difficult to fully engage with this criticism, but once the symptoms subside, in years to come, perhaps I will end up remembering this as the tournament when ‘soccer’ thoroughly divorced itself from the jumpers for goalposts and left wingers slipping on dog dirt days of my youth. Unless, of course, England end up winning it.

Back in my halcyon childhood, football still clung to the Kes-like charm of having a faint whiff of anti-elitism. You could well imagine a Blackburn fullback in their Premier League days doing a spot of post-match pigeon racing.

So, in his latest Far Out comic, David Squires highlights how far those days are gone by attempting to bring them back. Donald Trump stars in a notable corrupt incarnation of the Kes at the football World Cup…
