Remembering David Lynch’s bizarre advert for a home pregnancy test
The great David Lynch is remembered for a lot of his work; Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, just to name but a few. The recent announcement naming the filmmaker as honorary Oscar recipient was justice served, Lynch was finally recognised for his work in the biggest stage.
Lynch’s method of working has been studied for years, his mysterious overtones and unique storytelling ability has left him revered by many as the “Renaissance man of modern American filmmaking,” a pioneer of the modern era. Like many of us though, we’ve all taken jobs that have caused us to look back with raised eyebrows… and David Lynch is no exception to the rule.
While Lynch has succumbed to the demons of commercial work in the past, his 1997 effort for a home pregnancy test is arguably his strangest decision. Arriving at the same time as he released his neo-noir film Lost Highway, Lynch manages to be informative but extremely creepy in his advert for Clear Blue as the actress almost becomes sinister.
“The client was a little nervous that the spot would be eerie and scary,” David Cohen, executive producer of the ad, previously Entertainment Weekly. “But on the set, Lynch was constantly making sure the client was happy.”
