David Lynch has shared a new video for Donovan song 'I Am The Shaman'

As part of a celebration for Donovan’s 75th birthday, esteemed director and professionally strange auteur, David Lynch, has directed a brand new video for his song ‘I Am Shaman’. It’s a fittingly bonkers scenario that we’re more than happy to share with you below.

An icon of the hippie movement here in Britain, Donovan’s place in music history was cemented long before his 2010 album Ritual Groove. Having worked within the same circles as The Beatles and Bob Dylan, the Scottish songwriter gained a reputation for being one o the most authentic artists of his generation. However, even he must’ve been pleased to see David Lynch appearing at his door equipped with the aforementioned record and a willingness to make one of the standout songs on the LP truly pop.

The new video for ‘I Am Shaman’ was released in 2010 and was even produced by Lynch. The two old friends collaborated a decade ago and seem more than happy to pick up the pieces once more in 2021 to celebrate Donovan’s milestone birthday.

The du originally connected over a shared passion for Transcendental Meditation. Lynch has been a longtime advocate for the practice while Donovan’s affinity with TM can be traced back to his time with The Beatles in Rikishesh, learning under the tutelage of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

A bonus track on the original LP, Donovan shared how he came to record the song with Lynch at his Los Angeles-based studio: “It was all impromptu… I visited the studio and David said, ‘Sit at the mics with your guitar Don’. David in the same room behind the control desk with my Linda [Donovan’s wife]. He had asked me to only bring in a song just emerging, not anywhere near finished. We would see what happens. It happened!”

The singer effused that “the verses came naturally. New chord patterns effortlessly appeared… On another day David ‘Sound Sculpted’ my Ferrington acoustic guitar ‘Kelly’ and he played his unique Modal Chord Ferrington Guitar textures with ‘Effects’.”

Back to the video, and everything is as deliciously Lynchian as one might hope. Not only is it shot in pure black and white, but we also get a taste of space exploration as well as inner peace. Fitting, considering Donovan is using the video to raise money to teach Transcendental Meditation.
