David Letterman backs Seth Meyers after Donald Trump calls for his firing
David Letterman has issued public support for Seth Meyers after the late-night host became the latest celebrity in Donald Trump’s firing line.
Meyers is the latest television personality to call out Trump and his administration. He devoted the ‘Closer Look’ segment of his show on November 24th to the strangely friendly meeting between Trump and New York’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani.
“He looks like a five-year-old meeting Mickey Mouse,” said Meyers of the president. He continued, “I’ve never seen Trump this smitten before. This is a reminder: he doesn’t work with a single cool person!”
Meyers added, “He is surrounded by so many charmless goons that the first time he got to hang out with someone that had a little charisma, he swooned like he was on a date with the varsity quarterback.”
He then took on Trump’s likeness when parodying a filmed segment of the interview, in which Trump permitted Mandani to call him a fascist. Meyer, pretending to be Trump, smiled flirtatiously, “You can call me a fascist, you can call me – I’ll be whatever you want me to be!”
Trump blasted Meyers on Truth Social on November 15th, claiming he is “suffering from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS).” Trump also wrote that Meyers’ ratings are a “disaster” and that “Meyers has no talent, and NBC should fire him, IMMEDIATELY!”
Letterman has reacted to the president’s outlandish comments for his friend in the industry on a new episode of The Barbara Gaines Show. He said, “The President of the United States now wants to fire Seth Meyers. And I thought, ‘This is just delightful.’ How do you think that’s going to go? Anyway, I’ve never been more proud of Seth Meyers.”
Letterman went on to praise Meyers, who took over hosting duties in 2014 on the show that Letterman used to host from 1982 to 1993. He commented that his peer does a “magical job” hosting.
“But just remember, Seth: Things happen,” he warned, echoing the tasteless comment Trump had made while discussing the recent murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Previously speaking in defence of Jimmy Kimmel, Letterman also lashed out at Trump: “You can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian, a criminal administration in the Oval Office. That’s just not how this works.”
