Last week saw Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour perform a cover of two Leonard Cohen songs, ‘Bird on a Wire’ and ‘So Long, Marianne’, and this week he’s back with two more.
The legendary guitarist and singer was taking part in a livestream to promote his wife, Polly Samson’s new novel. Alongside his family, Gilmour shares two new covers.
Billed as the “Von Trapped” family, Gilmour and his nearest and dearest got together to perform ‘Fingerprints’ from 1977’s Death of a Ladies Man (around the 15-minute mark in the video) and ‘Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye’ from his classic Songs of Leonard Cohen (around the 32-minute mark.)
Gilmour didn’t just pick the songs out of a hat. Though we’re sure Gilmour would count himself as a fan of the late, great Leonard Cohen, he’s been singing his songs for another reason.
These tracks are all songs Cohen wrote while situated on Hydra, the Greek island Cohen exiled himself to in the sixties, and also, the setting for Samson’s new novel, Theatre for Dreamers.
The release was set to have a large media roll out across London until the current crisis placed heavy restrictions. Instead, we can be happy at seeing David Gilmour take on another two classic Cohen songs.
