Watch Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour cover two Leonard Cohen songs in new online live stream

David Gilmour, best known as the iconic guitarist and co-lead singer of Pink Floyd, has produced two spectacular covers of Leonard Cohen as part of a new online live stream.

Gilmour, who had planned to hit the road on a short ‘words and music’ tour which came in promotion of his wife’s, Polly Samson’s new novel, the couple have been forced to alter their creative output amid strict social distancing regulations.

With the tour dates put on ice, the couple have followed the example of many other artists and taken their performance to the world of online streaming.

Samson’s new novel, which is entitled A Theatre For Dreamers, is set on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960 and, interestingly, features a young Leonard Cohen. “1960. The world is dancing on the edge of revolution, and nowhere more so than on the Greek island of Hydra, where a circle of poets, painters and musicians live tangled lives, ruled by the writers Charmian Clift and George Johnston, troubled king and queen of Bohemia,” the book’s official synopsis reads. “Forming within this circle is a triangle: its points the magnetic, destructive writer Axel Jensen, his dazzling wife Marianne Ihlen, and a young Canadian poet named Leonard Cohen.

The synopsis continues: “Into their midst arrives teenage Erica, with little more than a bundle of blank notebooks and her grief for her mother. Settling on the periphery of this circle, she watches, entranced and disquieted, as a paradise unravels. Burning with the heat and light of Greece, A Theatre for Dreamers is a spellbinding novel about utopian dreams and innocence lost—and the wars waged between men and women on the battlegrounds of genius.”

Now, with their collaborative tour dates postponed, Gilmour and Samson live-streamed a similar event from home. Below, see numerous different readings as well as Gilmour’s rendition of Cohen tracks ‘Bird on the Wire’ and ‘So Long, Marianne’.
