Were David Bowie and Mick Jagger really secret lovers?
In one of the more salacious rock and roll legends to circle the drain every so often, we see two icons of the music world allegedly sharing a little bit of fun in the bedroom together. If you’re to believe the wife of David Bowie, Angie, the Starman once shared a bed with The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger.
As initially detailed in the unofficial book Mick: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger, written by Christopher Andersen, the writer suggests that the two juggernaut performers were indeed having a bit of fun with one another during some of their wilder days. With androgyny and sexuality rooted at the heart of both artists’ personas it’s easy to see how this jump was made. But the rumours do seem to all boil down to one instance.
Andersen writes: “Angie had been out of town for a few days when she returned home one morning and went straight to the kitchen to make some tea. The Bowies’ maid, who had arrived about an hour earlier, approached the lady of the house with a peculiar look on her face. ‘Someone,’ she told Angie, ‘is in your bed.’
Angie went upstairs to her bedroom, slowly pushed the door open, and there they were: Mick Jagger and David Bowie, naked in bed together, sleeping. Both men woke up with a start. ‘Oh, hello,’ said Bowie, clearly taken by surprise. ‘How are you?’
… Angie ‘felt absolutely dead certain that they’d been screwing. It was so obvious, in fact, that I never even considered the possibility that they hadn’t been screwing.'”
With that in mind, we must point out that this book isn’t quite the scholarly scripture one might hope for. It is a bit of a braindead look at the glossiest, trashiest, understandably stimulating moments of Mick Jagger’s career both in front of the cameras and behind closed doors. The book goes on to claim that Jagger slept with nearly 4000 women as well as once leaving a date with Angelina Jolie to go on another date with Farrah Fawcett. All of which has us doubting it’s validity just a touch.
When Angie Bowie shared her own book, she was a touch more restrained than in the quote that surfaced with Andersen. Instead, Angie says that while she did indeed find them naked in bed that it was more likely down to their inebriated state. She remarked in the NME, “I said: ‘Did you guys have a good night?’ They were so hungover they could hardly speak. I took pity on them.”
Shen then confirms that if there was something a little saucier at play, it wasn’t anything serious. She said, “I don’t think it was a big love affair (with Mick), it was probably more drunken pawing.”
Following the sad loss of Bowie back in 2016 and with Mick Jagger not willing to touch any rumour about his sex life with a 10-foot barge pole, it’s likely we will never know the full truth about whether Bowie and Jagger had a love affair. But more importantly who cares if they did?
