Dave Grohl admits performing with Paul McCartney at Glastonbury following Taylor Hawkins’ death was “a blur”
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has reflected on making his return to the stage in 2022 with Paul McCartney at Glastonbury.
The performance saw Grohl make a guest appearance with McCartney during his headline set on the Pyramid Stage.
They initially performed The Beatles’ ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ and Wings’ ‘Band on the Run’, before Grohl returned alongside Bruce Springsteen during the encore of the set.
Notably, it was the first time that Grohl had performed on-stage since the passing of Taylor Hawkins earlier that year while Foo Fighters were on tour in South America. The rock band subsequently cancelled all dates in the wake of his tragic death.
Now, in a new interview with the BBC, Grohl explained that the appearance was thrown into disarray due to an issue with flights, which left him with little time to think of the show ahead of stepping out in-front of the 100,000-plus crowd.
He reflected, “I walked backstage 20 minutes before we were supposed to go on, so the whole thing was kind of a blur, but it meant a lot, for sure. He and his family were always so sweet and supportive and welcoming.”
In the same interview, Grohl also opened up about the challenge that Foo Fighters faced when they decided to continue after losing Hawkins, admitting, “Continuing as a band was not easy. We were like best friends and brothers – so it was really complicated and felt really strange for a little while.”
He then said that “if you’re surrounded by people that you know you can really rely on, that’s the key,” which, in his case, included McCartney.
This summer, Foo Fighters will play two UK shows in celebration of their new album, Your Favorite Toy, set for release on April 24th, which will both take place in McCartney’s hometown, Liverpool, in June.
However, Grohl is keen to downplay any expectations from fans that The Beatles legend will be repaying the favour, “Someone asked that this week. And then, of course, all the headlines said, ‘Dave Grohl has asked Paul to play in Liverpool’.”
Grohl clarified, “I have not asked. I only texted and said, ‘Hey, we’re playing in your home town’. And he goes, ‘You’ll love it’.”
While nothing is set in stone, McCartney did join Springsteen, who also appeared with him during the same Glastonbury set in 2022, when ‘The Boss’ headlined Anfield in Liverpool last summer.
