Dave Davies “cannot endorse” new biography on The Kinks, says it includes “misinformation”
The Kinks guitarist Dave Davies has denounced a new biography on the legendary British band.
The book in question, All Day and All of the Night The Day-By-Day Story Pt 1: 1940-1971, written by Doug and Andrew Sandoval, tells the story of the Davies brothers from their early years to The Kinks’ hit album, Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One.
Per Rolling Stone, Sandoval, who is an accomplished musician in his own right, spent two years on the road with Dave Davies as his musical director and guitarist, even appearing on 2000’s live album Rock Bottom.
The 520-page book arrived in February, but now Dave has spoken out against the book in a post on X on July 8th.
The Kinks icon wrote, “I cannot endorse the new Kinks book by Doug Hinman and Andrew Sandoval because there’s misinformation in it about our early recording sessions. I signed some copies for charity before I had read the errors.”
Davies did not specify precisely what alleged misinformation that the book includes. However, on his social channels in recent days, he has categorically denied the longstanding claim that Jimmy Page performed with The Kinks as a session musician, writing, “I’m sick and tired of this misinformation. Jimmy Page did not play on any Kinks hits.”
In another post, Davies said in a video when asked about Page, “I never knew the guy, and he used to play on other people’s sessions. I don’t know how this rumour started, but he did not play on any of my recordings.”
Previously, while speaking to Rolling Stone earlier this year, Sandoval claimed that Ray Davies was unhappy with the publication for the book, as he had allegedly hopes to release an autobiography of his own in the future.
The author shared, “Am I going to be Ray’s good friend or best friend? I don’t think that that’s a possibility now. And I’m not doing anything to try and upset him. But in my lifetime, I want this book to exist for other Kinks fans so that they have a basis of research. It’s the most definitive source for the material that you could get.”
In other Kinks news, last week, the Davies brothers announced a new exhibition, titled Brothers, which will be shown at the Gibson Garage in London between July 24th and September 6th.
For Brothers, they have teamed up with painter Christian Furr, who has reimagined an iconic shoot in 1968 that saw the Davies brothers cram into a photobooth in East Finchley as a new series of paintings.
Dave said of the new exhibition in a statement, “It was a magic moment when we crammed into the photobooth all those years ago. Christian Furr has done a wonderful job in developing the image into special artworks. We hope people love these as much as we do.”
