Darth Vader’s lightsaber sells for over £2.1 million in new ‘Star Wars’ record
A lightsaber used by Darth Vader in Star Wars has sold for more than £2 million at auction.
The famous prop, used in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, was sold at Propstore in Los Angeles on September 4th, fetching an eye-watering fee, which makes it the most expensive memorabilia in Star Wars history.
Before it headed to auction, the lightsaber was expected to be sold for between $1 million and $3 million. However, even the upper limit of the estimation proved to be conservative, as the final fee was $3.7 million (£2.1 million) once all of the additional fees were added to the initial $2.9 million figure.
Propstore’s chief operating officer, Brandon Alinger, said of the lucrative sale: “The result marks a landmark moment not just for Propstore, but for the entire world of film collecting.”
Alinger continued, “To see a Star Wars lightsaber – the symbol of one of cinema’s greatest sagas – become the highest-valued piece of the franchise ever sold at auction is incredibly special. It speaks to the enduring cultural power of Star Wars and the passion of fans and collectors who see these artefacts as touchstones of modern mythology.”
Elsewhere in the Star Wars universe, the upcoming movie Starfighter, which will be the first set in the world since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, recently added to its cast with Simon Bird and Amy Adams following the previous casting of Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth.
Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is directing the 2027 release. In April of this year, Levy managed expectations for the movie. He said, “This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”
