Daniel Radcliffe and Angelina Jolie win first Tony awards

Daniel Radcliffe and Angelina Jolie were among the victors at last night’s Tony Awards ceremony, marking the first time they have each taken home the coveted theatre award.

The 77th Tony Awards ceremony took place at the Lincoln Center in New York on June 16th and was hosted by Broadway star Ariana DeBose. The Outsiders took home the award for best musical, while Merrily We Roll Along won the title for best revived musical and took home several acting awards.

Radcliffe starred as Charley Kringas in last year’s revival of the Steven Sondheim musical alongside Broadway star Jonathan Groff. Radcliffe took home the award for his performance in a featured role, while Groff won for his leading performance.

While accepting the award, Radcliffe took the time to thank his parents and his girlfriend, stating, “My love Erin, you and our son are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I love you so much. Thank you so much.”

This marks the first time Radcliffe has won a Tony award, though he has been performing on Broadway since 2007. Radcliffe has previously been nominated for an Emmy and a Grammy, though he took home neither.

Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie also won her first Tony Award for her role behind the scenes on The Outsiders. Jolie was part of the production team for the musical, which borrows from both the novel and film of the same name.

The night also pushed Succession star Jeremy Strong halfway to the coveted EGOT title. His role as Kendall Roy in Jesse Armstrong’s satirical drama won him an Emmy back in 2020. After leaving the character behind last year, the method actor took on the role of Dr Thomas Stockmann in An Enemy of the People, starring alongside Victoria Pedretti and Michael Imperioli.

For his performance in the play, Strong took home the title of ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play’, beating the likes of William Jackson Harper for Uncle Vanya and Liev Schreiber for Doubt: A Parable.

In his speech, Strong opted to thank the cast and crew, as well as the “ushers and the front of house staff who see me walking in every day looking like I’ve just been run over by a truck, and see me walk out somehow looking even worse with bits of pretzels and Aquavit in my hair.”
