Jeremy Strong says that ‘Succession’ has been “happily put to rest”
Actor Jeremy Strong, known for his role as Kendall Roy in the TV show Succession, has spoken on the future of the series and admitted that he wouldn’t be interested in taking the narrative any further than its final season.
Strong plays the son of patriarchal media baron Logan Roy (played by Brian Cox), who competes with three equally power-hungry siblings for control over their family’s company as Roy announces his abdication.
At the 2024 Tony Awards Meet the Nominees show, Strong, who was in attendance for his effort as Dr Thomas Stockmann in An Enemy of the People, spoke of the possibility of a revival of the HBO show, dismissing it outright.
The actor told People, “I’m sure there’s a desire for more Succession,” before admitting that he would rather “pass that buck” onto series creator Jesse Armstrong. Strong went on to speak of his character’s arc and how it all felt finalised by the time the last episode was completed.
“I think in terms of the role that I played, he came to his terminal point,” Strong explained. “So, for me, that’s something that is very happily put to rest.” The actor had won an Emmy Award for his effort as Kendall Roy back in 2020.
When accepting the award, Strong spoke of his overall impression of getting to play his Succession character, noting, “I read a poem by [American poet] Stephen Dunn that said, ‘All I ever wanted was a book so good I’ll be finishing it for the rest of my life.’ This job was that, for me.”
Succession ended with Kendall finding out that he would not inherit the rights to his father’s media empire, though he went out fighting and yelling, “I feel like if I don’t get to do this, I might — I might — die. I’m the eldest boy! I’m the eldest boy!”
The HBO series drew to a close last year, since which point Strong returned to Broadway for the first time since 2012. At the Circle in the Square Theatre, he has been performing the adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play An Enemy of the People, written by Amy Herzog and Sam Gold.
The new version, which also stars Michael Imperioli and Victoria Pedretti from The Sopranos, has been adapted for a modern audience. While Strong is working on new projects, he has no interest in reviving Kendall Roy from the final season of Succession.
