The ‘Curb your Enthusiasm’ episode that led to the clearing of a murder charge

After Seinfeld came to an end, the show’s co-creator, Larry David, started working on a new project, Curb Your Enthusiasm. The sitcom aired in 2000, with David starring as a fictionalised version of himself. Moody, misanthropic and difficult, Larry continuously finds himself in strange predicaments, annoying his family and friends and making many accidental enemies in the process.

Also starring Cheryl Hines, Richard Lewis, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman and a handful of other actors, Curb Your Enthusiasm was received positively upon its release. Since then, 11 more seasons have aired, with the series officially coming to an end in early 2024. Over the years, David has introduced many iconic characters, such as J.B. Smoove’s Leon, his loyal housemate, and Bob Einstein’s Marty Funkhouser, with whom he often clashes despite being a close friend.

However, back in 2003, a great episode of Curb was being filmed as part of season four, called ‘The Car Pool Lane’. In the episode, Larry is desperate to go to the Dodgers game, and Cheryl surprises him with two tickets as an anniversary present. He decides to go with his manager and best pal, Jeff, but he ends up dropping out last minute. Subsequently, Larry goes alone but finds himself stuck in a traffic jam, which threatens to make him late. Thus, he has the smart idea to pick up a prostitute who is standing on a street nearby so that he can use the carpool lane.

Once he arrives at the stadium, there are many shots of him in the audience, where he sees Marty and, unsurprisingly, has a disagreement with him. Meanwhile, a man named Juan Catalan was also in the stadium, watching the game with his daughter from the same section of the audience that Larry was being filmed in.

Yet, Catalan’s life was soon turned upside down. That same night, a 16-year-old girl named Martha Puebla was shot and killed in California shortly after testifying against Catalan’s brother, Mario, a gang member. Thus, police connected the crime to Catalan, who happened to have a criminal record from his teenage days.

He ended up on death row despite being adamant that he didn’t commit the crime. Catalan stressed that he was watching the Dodgers’ game that night, but he had no concrete evidence to prove that he was there. Prosecutors wanted video footage showing that he was there if they were going to let him off the hook, so, luckily for Catalan, his lawyer, Todd Melnik, did all he could to find footage of the night.

Catalan thought back to the night and remembered that something was being filmed not too far from where he was sitting, but he had no idea what it was. Melnik contacted the stadium and discovered that Curb Your Enthusiasm had been filming that same day, leading him to get in touch with the producers, asking to see all of the footage they had from the game. After extensively analysing hours of footage, Melnik finally spotted Catalan and his daughter in the crowd from several angles.

The odds of Catalan being in the video were incredibly slim, considering the sheer number of people in the stadium, but he ended up appearing just a few metres away from Larry as he walked through the bleachers. You can see Catalan and his daughter returning to their seats after purchasing snacks for the game, walking in front of Larry and then sitting a few rows behind him.

Catalan was cleared of the charges and was able to reunite with his family. As for Puebla’s killer, a gang member was eventually caught and imprisoned for the crime several years later. It’s a miracle that Catalan was caught on the Curb Your Enthusiasm tape, subsequently saving his life. Even stranger, though, is that the episode ends with Marty being arrested after being wrongly accused of possessing marijuana, leading Larry to end up in court.
