Country star Luke Combs reveals “particularly wicked” secret OCD battle
Country singer Luke Combs has shined a light recently on his intense battle with obsessive-compulsive- disorder (OCD). In an honest assessment, he said that the condition was “particularly wicked”.
Combs spoke about the different forms of OCD which exist. He empathised that for a lot of sufferers, it manifests as various compulsive behaviours such as flicking light switches on and off; however, his form is purely obsessional. This means that he has a large amount of internalised anxiety and intrusive thoughts.
“Probably the worst flare-up of it I’ve had in, I would say three or four years, started about two days before this trip,” said Combs during his interview with 60 Minutes Australia.
He continued, “It’s something that, in some way, I at least think about every day. There’s some tinge of it to some extent every day. The craziness of the particular disorder that I have, it’s the way to get out of it.”
Combs highlighted that when one sees someone with OCD flicking a light switch on and off repeatedly, one understands what’s happening. However, the singer admitted he struggles because people can’t see how it’s impacting him, he has to deal with everything internally which can be challenging.
“It’s thoughts, essentially, that you don’t want to have,” said Combs, “And then they cause you stress, and then you’re stressed out, and then the stress causes you to have more of the thoughts, and then you don’t understand why you’re having them, and you’re trying to get rid of them, but trying to get rid of them makes you have more of them.”
While Combs concedes OCD does impact his life, he is also now in a good position to get on top of his intrusive thoughts as he understands them better now thanks to putting in the work to comprehend the condition.
