Coachella 2025: Green Day change ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ lyrics in support of Palestine during headline set
Green Day changed the lyrics of their hit ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ to support Palestine during their headline set at Coachella on April 12th.
The legendary American rock band, who were sharing the top of the bill with Travis Scott on April 12th, decided to use the platform to highlight the injustices suffered by children in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
When performing the 2004 tune ‘Jesus of Suburbia’, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong sang the words “Runnin’ away from pain, like the kids from Palestine/ Tales from another broken home,” instead of the usual lyrics of “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised.”
This is just the latest in a range of political statements Green Day has made throughout their music. Last month, they used the same song to call US Vice President JD Vance a disability slur. Prior to that, they also called out President Donald Trump during their 2023 New Year’s performance of ‘American Idiot’, with Armstrong proclaiming, “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”
Along with their blazing sentiments, the band’s Coachella set almost ended in flames. At the conclusion of their performance of their most esteemed 2004 hit, an erroneous fireworks display was shot into the crowd which set a palm tree alight. It is unclear if anyone was injured in the incident.
Aside from Green Day, the first weekend of the California desert festival featured performances from fellow headliners Lady Gaga, Post Malone, and Travis Scott. It also featured political messages from US politician Bernie Sanders, who made an appearance during Clairo’s set to condemn Trump.
The second weekend of Coachella will take place from April 18th to 20th with the same headlining bill.
