Green Day mock JD Vance during show in Australia
At a recent concert in Australia, Green Day shared their criticism of the US government and changed the lyrics to one of their most beloved songs to protest against Vice President JD Vance.
Green Day just started the Australian leg of their Saviors world tour, which began one day after the tense encounter between the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office with Donald Trump and JD Vance. Significantly, the president and vice president confronted him in front of the media, even mocking the symbolic clothes he wears while his country is at war with Russia.
Witnessing these scenes, Green Day took a stand on stage. While playing their song ‘Jesus of Suburbia’, Billie Joe Armstrong sang, “Am I r*tarded, or am I just overjoyed?” to “Am I r*tarded, or am I just JD Vance?”
Later in the same song, Armstrong changed more lyrics as he sang, “We are the kids of war and peace/From Ukraine to the Middle East” instead of, “We are kids of war and peace/From Anaheim to the Middle East.”
Earlier on at the same show, he changed more lyrics to political sentiments. “Don’t want politicians to shut the fuck up?” the frontman said during their song ‘American Idiot’, adding, “Don’t you want Elon Musk to shut the fuck up? Don’t you want Donald Trump to show the fuck up?”
In January 2025, Armstrong changed some more lyrics during a show in South Africa. Instead of singing the lyric, “I’m not a part of the redneck agenda,“ Armstrong said, “I’m not a part of the Elon agenda.”
He pulled a similar move back in 2023, during the band’s performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve concert, when they sang, “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda,” attacking Donald Trump as his new bid for office began again.
