Christopher McQuarrie provides update on ‘Top Gun 3’
Director Christopher McQuarrie has provided a promising update on his and Tom Cruise‘s plans to make Top Gun 3.
McQuarrie and Cruise’s latest collaboration, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, has been another box office phenomenon for the duo since its release on May 23rd. While the tale of Ethan Hunt has seemingly come to an end, they are already plotting their next cinematic move.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, hosted by Josh Horowitz, McQuarrie said of devising a story for the next Top Gun movie: “It wasn’t hard. I thought it would be, and that’s a good place to go from as you walk into the room going, ‘Come on, what are we going to do?’.”
He continued, “And Ehren Kruger pitched something and I went, ‘Mmm actually,’ and we had one conversation about it and the framework is there. So, no, it’s not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack.”
McQuarrie then opened up about his creative process, providing essential tips for any aspiring filmmakers, sharing, “It’s as you start to execute it, and as you start to interrogate it, as you start [to think] why these movies are made the way they are.”
The director added: “It’s not the action, it’s not even the level of or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action [or] the engineering around the action, it’s none of those things — it’s the emotion.”
While there remains no timeframe on when Top Gun 3 will eventually materialise on screen, Cruise also recently lifted the lid on the project and confirmed it was in his plans alongside a sequel to Days of Thunder.
The Hollywood star shared: “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”
