Cannes 2025: Tom Cruise breaks festival rule with ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ cast
On May 13th, at the Cannes Film Festival, Tom Cruise and the rest of the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning cast broke a festival rule that has been in place since 2018.
While Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning isn’t in competition at Cannes, it had its global premiere at the illustrious film festival. Cruise walked the red carpet with his co-stars, such as Simon Pegg, Hannah Waddingham, Trammell Tilman, Hayley Atwell and Angela Bassett.
To celebrate the occasion, the stars of the highly anticipated movie, which is set to hit cinemas on May 21st, congregated for a selfie taken by the film’s director, Christopher McQuarrie. Although it was a sweet moment of celebration for those involved, but it’s strictly prohibited from the red carpet at Cannes.
The festival’s general director, Thierry Frémaux, explained the ban to Le Film Français in 2018, stating, “On the red carpet, the trivial aspect and the slowing down provoked by the disorder which these selfies create tarnishes the quality of [the red carpet experience] and of the festival as a whole.”
The image was later shared on the official Instagram for the movie along with the knowing caption, “Mission: Selfie. Accomplished.”
As it stands, Cannes has yet to take any action, which is unlikely to change considering Cruise’s star power and the cast of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
The new movie has a budget of around $300 million, and McQuarrie is hopeful that it will boost cinemas amid the age of streaming. The director said earlier this week to journalist Didier Allouch: “I’m not sitting here to advocate for [streaming] because I’m a diehard believer in the big-screen experience, and I believe that what makes film special is that however many hundreds of strangers have all come together to sit in a room and watch something together and experience something together.”
