Charli XCX releases ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ B-sides on iTunes despite vowing not to
Charli XCX has released some of her B-sides from Music, Fashion, Film on streaming, despite initially vowing not to do this.
The singer released her latest album last week, with a snappy collection of 11 songs spanning just half an hour in length. However, she previously revealed that each track has a B-side pairing which would appear on physical formats but not digitally.
But backtracking on this decision, Charli took to her dedicated B-sides Instagram account on July 26th to reveal that three of the songs had, in fact, been released on iTunes.
Justifying her stance, the ‘Rock Music’ singer wrote: “I made B sides for each of the songs released ahead of Music, Fashion, Film because it felt natural to pair each songs with a fitting counterpart – something that’s adjacent to the album but not entirely part of it.”
Despite this, she added, “Traditionally, B sides often become fan favorites… and I guess in the case of some of the B sides for this album, that has proven to be true.”
The songs ‘I Keep On Thinking Bout You Every Single Day and Night’, ‘Playboy Bunny’, and ‘If You Take the Music Then What Has She Got?’, as the pairings to the main album singles of ‘Rock Music’, ‘SS26’, and ‘Camera’, are now available on the platform for $4.99, which includes the 11 original tracks of Music, Fashion, Film, as well as the three B-sides.
“I felt adamant I wouldn’t put them on streaming because it sort of felt counter intuitive to the whole ethos of those songs, but I know you all really wanted them so I’ve begrudgingly put them on iTunes lol,” Charli added.
She rounded off her post by saying, “You can call me a hypocrite, I don’t mind. Love you all and I hope you enjoy these special songs in ur ears.”
On the whole, Music, Fashion, Film has had a mixed response from critics, with Far Out writing in a two-star review: “Instead of pushing pop forwards, the album rummages through yesterday’s dressing-up box. But while there are moments of catchiness and the odd thrill, like all fancy dress parties on a Monday morning, without due conviction and too many winks, the whole thing becomes boorishly tedious.”
However, Charli herself has been keen to give fans insight into the process of the album, releasing an accompanying self-directed film, charting the meaning of Music, Fashion, Film on YouTube over the weekend.
